Female (and male) researchers in the experimental sciences face particular difficulties if they have children. It is therfore essential to offer reliable and affordable day care. Hence, several initiatives have been started in the recent years.

The new University Graduate School day care centre for childrem from the age of 4 months upwards which will be especially designed for the needs of academic researchers. The centre will have extended and flexible opening hours and remain open during school holidays. English-speaking staff will also be available. SFB Researchers will also have acess to an existing public/private day care facility located next to the Biosciences campus that takes children from 3 to 6 years during normal working hours. The new Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing plans to establish a day care to adress the long-overdue need for adequate child care facilities to serve faculty, staff and others on the campus.

Even if day to day care is available, this is still insufficient to cover for conferences, sickness or research project hours that are not always compatible with service hours of typical childcare facilities. As a first step to minimize the number of these events the SFB has agreed on so-called family time that is kept as free as possible of meetings or other professional obligations. In cases where this is impossible, a back-up service for the researcher´s children is planned. This service is offered by various private enteprises (e.g. pme Familienservice GmbH) and can be handled flexible. A certain contingent is booked and retrieved whenever necessary. This concept includes that children will be picked up according to the researchers´s need and taken care of as long as necessary. It should be emphasized that the same day care and backup service will be available to male researchers with children to underline the possibilities of shared parental leave and dual career for both partners as foreseen in German law.
