The Female Career Center (FFC) is one key future of the University of Cologne’s commitment to the advancement of women. It provides regular training courses in such vital areas as networking, presentation, interview technique etc. aimed at students, graduate students as well as staff scientists. In addition, the FCC offers support and advice during all stages of career development with a special program for women in mathematics and natural sciences. Another essential pillar of the scheme is the office for gender equality. This office is instrumental in promoting female networks and providing an extensive information source on existing gender career planning, promotion and salary negotiation as well as a support unit to better deal with sexual and other harassment cases.

The SFB incorporates eight female independent project leaders. Our goal is to advance their careers and, more importantly, strongly encourage young female scientists to pursue a scientific career. Aside from gender related programs and facilities, the SFB and the University of Cologne also provide the following resources:

Workshops for PhD and Postdocs
Those are Workshops to develop assertive and self-confident communication strategies (e.g. the KEPOS course) All Workshops offered by the SFB 829 are free of charge!

Grants for Female Postdocs
These Grants were constructed to increase the representation of female scientists in leadership positions and to foster the scientific independence of women.

Networking activities
There are different activities that can be joined to get in contact with extraordinary women in biological science, e.g. “Cewis” or “Ladies in Science”.

Maternity leave fellowships
To support women facing maternity leave they can ask for a fellowship to get a assistance for the everyday lab routines.

Child care assistance
We also encourage young mothers to re-enter the science field by helping them in finding appropriate child care facilities.

Women in Science and Society
This is a lecture series that brings prominet female scientists to Cologne to discuss science and the role of female scientists in society. You will find more information here

University of Cologne – measures & activities

The Female Career Program (FCP) offers the opportunity of systematically enhancing the professional and personal profiles by attending seminars and workshops. In these courses, external trainers convey valuable specialized and insider information relevant to first degree and PhD programs and/or various professions. The objective is to make participants more aware of own abilities and to assist them in better presenting these while also showing them how to employ these to advantage in various professional fields. Course fees can be supported by the SFB 829.

Individual career coaching
The University of Cologne and particularly the Department for Academic Staff Development offers a diverse portfolio of mentoring programs for female scientists at different career levels. For more information please visit their website.
One of such programs is the “Cornelia Harte Mentoring” (CHM), which was launched in 2001 and is aimed at doctoral candidates, PhD students, Postdocs, assistant professors and heads of research groups in medicine.

Management Program
The management program consist of seminars on leadership, time management, delegation, professional appearance, communication and conflict management. Significant components of this development process are the technical guidance from experienced trainers, intensive group work and feedback sessions as well as the personal and professional exchange among the participants.
