Z1 Niessen

The central office was and is the communication and administrative centre of the CRC 829. The office has two main aims: (1) represent the scientific, financial and administrative interests of the CRC 829 at the institutional level and (2) promote scientific interactions that allow CRC members to discover common goals and collaborations as well as connect the CRC to the national and international scientific community.

In the last period Z1 achieved this through a range of activities: Z1 coordinated scientific and financial matters with the administrations of the different cooperative institutions (UoC, University Clinic, MPIs, the Sports University). The central office also organized several international symposia in Cologne, internal and external seminar series with invited speakers, end of the year symposia, retreats and a summer school that were instrumental to promote and encourage contacts and collaborations within the CRC as well as with outside experts from the field. The office also set up collaborations and meetings that were organised in the context of the Global Skin Disease Research Consortium (GSDRC) and organized the stay of CRC 829 guest scientists.

Furthermore, the office assisted newly arriving CRC 829 group leaders to set up their lab and greatly helped foreign new CRC members with settling into Germany. Another crucial activity was the development and execution of gender equality and family measures, done in close consultation with the UoC Centre for Gender Quality Management. It also integrated the clinician scientist positions in the CRC, ran CRC daily affairs and guaranteed implementation of its bylaws.

Finally, Z1, in close collaboration with Z3, devised and implemented career development programs and courses. One crucial measure to manage this combination of complex tasks was to install a scientific coordinator in the first period, which turned out to be instrumental in strongly expanding and improving the organizational structure.
