An important aspect of the CRC 829 remains the generation and careful cell biological and ultrastructural analysis of mouse and cell culture models that address different aspects of skin homeostasis and pathogenesis and translate these findings to human skin biology and pathology. Characterization and comparison of these mouse models requires a high standard of cell biological, histological and ultrastructural expertise. Z2 was therefore established to provide technical expertise and support in primary skin 2D and 3D cell culture, general mouse skin phenotypic analysis, and histological and ultrastructural analysis of human and mouse cells and tissues. For the new period the CRC has installed a new translation Z4 (N) project that now incorporates the old Z2 morphological unit to further accelerate translation of main CRC findings to the clinic. Z2 will focus on offering expertise in the complex cell culture and standardised animal model skin assays and assist all projects with the ultrastructural analysis of these cell culture models, mouse models and human tissues as well as implement novel technology developments in these areas.
