Professor Kjellén will present two lectures: a scientific seminar on her recent research and a general lecture on the role of women in science and how Swedish universities deal with gender issues.
Lena Kjellén is professor of Medical Glycobiology in the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology at the University of Uppsala. Her area of research is heparan sulfate proteoglycans where she has studied both their biosynthesis and more functional aspects. During recent years she has generated and utilized mice deficient in heparan sulfate biosynthesis enzymes for her studies.
Kjellén spent one and a half year in Birmingham, Alabama, USA and has worked at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. She presently has an appointment as Professor II at Bergen University, Norway.
Furthermore, Kjellén is a dedicated teacher for medical and biomedical students at the University of Uppsala.
Besides her research and teaching activities, Kjellén is also committed to a number of councils: she is the coordinator of a Swedish network in Glycobiology, MEDIGLY, financed by the Swedish Research Council and is the Swedish representative of the steering committee of the ESF supported Euroglycosciences Forum. She used to be a member of The Scientific Council for Medicine at the Swedish Research Council, where she functioned as vice chairman for some time. Since 2007 she is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Science.
